1. Get whiter, healthier teeth
An apple won’t replace your toothbrush, but biting and chewing an apple stimulates the production of saliva in your mouth, reducing tooth decay by lowering the levels of bacteria.
2. Avoid Alzheimer’s
A new study performed on mice shows that drinking apple juice could keep Alzheimer’s away and fight the effects of aging on the brain. Mice in the study that were fed an apple-enhanced diet showed higher levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and did better in maze tests than those on a regular diet.
3. Protect against Parkinson’s
Research has shown that people who eat fruits and other high-fibre foods gain a certain amount of protection against Parkinson’s, a disease characterized by a breakdown of the brain’s dopamine-producing nerve cells. Scientists have linked this to the free radical-fighting power of the antioxidants contained therein.
4. Curb all sorts of cancers
Scientists from the American Association for Cancer Research, among others, agree that the consumption of flavonol-rich apples could help reduce your risk of developing pancreatic cancer by up to 23 per cent. Researchers at Cornell University have identified several compounds—triterpenoids—in apple peel that have potent anti-growth activities against cancer cells in the liver, colon and bosom. Their earlier research found that extracts from whole apples can reduce the number and size of mammary tumours in rats. Meanwhile, the National Cancer Institute in the U.S. has recommended a high fibre intake to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
5. Decrease your risk of diabetes
Women who eat at least one apple a day are 28 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who don’t eat apples. Apples are loaded with soluble fibre, the key to blunting blood sugar swings.
6. Reduce cholesterol
The soluble fibre found in apples binds with fats in the intestine, which translates into lower cholesterol levels and a healthier you.
7. Get a healthier heart
An extensive body of research has linked high soluble fibre intake with a slower buildup of cholesterol-rich plaque in your arteries. The phenolic compound found in apple skins also prevents the cholesterol that gets into your system from solidifying on your artery walls. When plaque builds inside your arteries, it reduces blood flow to your heart, leading to coronary artery disease.
8. Prevent gallstones
Gallstones form when there’s too much cholesterol in your bile for it to remain as a liquid, so it solidifies. They are particularly prevalent in the obese. To prevent gallstones, doctors recommend a diet high in fibre to help you control your weight and cholesterol levels.
9. Beat diarrhea and constipation
Whether you can’t go to the bathroom or you just can’t stop, fibre found in apples can help. Fibre can either pull water out of your colon to keep things moving along when you’re backed up, or absorb excess water from your stool to slow your bowels down.
10. Neutralize irritable bowel syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain and bloating. To control these symptoms doctors recommend staying away from dairy and fatty foods while including a high intake of fibre in your diet.
11. Avert hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are a swollen vein in the BehindBased canal and while not life threatening, these veins can be very painful. They are caused by too much pressure in the pelvic and rectal areas. Part and parcel with controlling constipation, fibre can prevent you from straining too much when going to the bathroom and thereby help alleviate hemorrhoids.
12. Control your weight
Many health problems are associated with being overweight, among them heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. To manage your weight and improve your overall health, doctors recommend a diet rich in fibre. Foods high in fibre will fill you up without costing you too many calories.
13. Detoxify your liver
We’re constantly consuming toxins, whether it is from drinks or food, and your liver is responsible for clearing these toxins out of your body. Many doctors are skeptical of fad detox diets, saying they have the potential to do more harm than good. Luckily, one of the best—and easiest—things you can eat to help detoxify your liver is fruits—like apples.
14. Boost your immune system
Red apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin. Recent studies have found that quercetin can help boost and fortify your immune system, especially when you’re stressed out.
15. Prevent cataracts
Though past studies have been divided on the issue, recent long-term studies suggest that people who have a diet rich in fruits that contain antioxidants—like apples—are 10 to 15 per cent less likely to develop cataracts.
Jide is a good christian. He lives in Lagos with his family. Their marriage is 7 years old now and they have a lovely, enviable christian home. They waited for 5 years before they could start having children. When the Lord blessed them with the fruit of the womb, it was a miracle they will forever be grateful for. Their second child was born 2 years after. While they waited for those 5 years, they adopted a child. So, they have 3 children and even considering to stop it there. They love each other pieces. And nothing and no one comes between them…
Now, the story is that Jide got a job to work in the east. He lives and works at Awka and goes home to visit his family in Lagos regularly. By a stroke of carelessness, Jide; a born again Christian, well grounded and a leader in a church where their holiness standard is very high fell in love with an ibo girl @ Awka. It was genuine love. They truly love each other, but the complexity of their relationship stare them in the face every day! Chinyere is a good hearted young woman. “Well endowed” and beautiful. Jide can’t resist her. But there is crystal clear sincerity between them. She knows Jide’s wife and children. She doesn’t want to be a second wife. Yet she can’t help being in love with Jide. They ravaged each other in hot passionate sex at every opportunity. Chinyere used postinol each time they made love without condom. Over a year into their passionate relationship, and despite their carefulness and preventive measures, she got pregnant!
They can’t get married cos Jide has a happy home already. Chinyere is good hearted enough to resist any temptation to cause any harm to Jide’s home, especially his lovely wife. They can’t abort the preg cos Jide still fears God and does not want to be blood guilty. He believes abortion is murder! Chinyere once had an experience of abortion that almost took her life. They can’t nurse the pregnancy and have the child because they don’t want to distabilize Jide’s marriage. How about Chinyere’s chances of getting her own husband if she carries another man’s (illegitimate) child about? Where and how will they nurse the child? So so many questions. They are confused. Need help. Need advice and I don’t know what to advise. Don’t judge them. Just suggest a way out of their dilemma and keep it at the level of suggestion. No name-calling and judgemental statements please. Reactions please…

DELTA State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts says it has uncovered alleged fraud in monumental proportion in all the existing 25 local government councils in the State without exception, running into billions of naira.
The Public Accounts Committee of the House led by Mr. Denis Omovie stated this while presenting its report on the Review of Report of the Auditor General Local Governments on the accounts of the 25 local government councils between 2009 to 2011.
It stated that, “Mr. Speaker, this committee was shocked that various sums of money such as Withholding Tax, union dues, retention fees, PAYE etc were placed on the deposit accounts of the local government councils on behalf of Federal Government, State Government, other institutional bodies and individuals.
“From 2009 to 2011, which is the period under review, these amounts were still outstanding and un-remitted to the beneficiaries, to the total sum of four billion, thirty six million, six hundred and seventy eight thousand, one hundred and thirty three naira, thirty two kobo (N4,036,678,133.32).
“Mr. Speaker, it is of interest to note that these deposit balances were supposed to have been remitted to appropriate government bodies/agencies/individuals as they were monies collected at source for various types of services rendered to the local councils.
However, while the books of the local government councils may be carrying credit balances reflecting these deposits”, the report went on, “there are no cash representation on same deposit as indeed the fund has been misappropriated by the local government councils.
The Committee further stated that “it is sad to note at this point that the setting up of various revenue committees have impacted negatively on the internal revenue generation efforts of the local government councils.
“These revenue committees have now become avenues through which funds meant for the local governments are being diverted into private pockets and accounts. The resultant effect is the decrease in internally generated revenue as indicated in table 6 above”, the report stated.

Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar yesterday advised Nigerians not to allow any policeman anywhere in the country extort money from them over the issue of tinted glass permit disclosing that permit for tinted glass is free.
The IG gave the advice even as he noted that the law on tinted glass and implementation was motivated by the need for safety for all Nigerians adding, “nobody can compel law enforcement agencies to abandon their responsibilities of implementing the law and order as stipulated in the statute books”.
Abubakar who was speaking during an emergency security meeting with Zonal AIG’s at Force headquarters, said, “The issue here is that most criminals use tinted glass to hide arms and ammunition, they use it to hide IEDS’, they use it to throw bombs at churches and kill innocent Nigerians and we cannot allow this to continue”.
Explaining that according to the law, tinted glasses are supposed to be used for two purposes, by security outfits and for medical purposes, the IG said, “Now, kidnappers use it, armed robbers use it, terrorists use it. That is why we have to checkmate it”.
Abubakar frowned at those trying to make issues out of the tinted glass directive saying, “There is nowhere that an amount of money was written to be paid for tinted glass permit. Police is not a revenue generation agency. In any case, tell me, what a commercial vehicle owner is doing with tinted glass? What is the ordinary citizen doing with tinted glass?” he asked.
Consequently he said, “The law is clear on tinted glasses. The only two premises under which tinted glasses can be used are for security and medical reasons. On security, there are agencies and offices permitted to use such glasses and for the medical, there has to be something or problem with your sight”.
“If anybody brings a car with tinted glass into the country, the law gives him or her two weeks to remove it or secure a permit. And the law vests the power to issue permit to the IGP because of the need to avoid abuse”.
On the essence of the security meeting, he said, “It to review the security situation in the states of the country. As you know, the Zonal AIG’s superintended over security in the states under them”.
“We have issues of terrorism, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, communal clashes, revolving lights, use of siren, tinted glass and most importantly, crime and criminality to contend with”.
Bras do nothing to help support a woman’s bosoms and could even be causing damage, research has found.
The Telegraph of London reported on Friday that for years, women have been taught of the virtues of a good bra in order to make the most of their assets and defy the pull of gravity.
Now a French study has claimed that bosoms gain no benefit from underwear support and that women would do better to go without them.
Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon of Besançon University spent 15 years studying the anatomy of 330 women, before coming to the conclusion that bras are a “false necessity.”
Professor Rouillon said: “Medically, physiologically and anatomically, bosoms gain no benefit from being denied gravity.”
The study found that bosoms were firmer and sagged less in the women who did not wear a bra, and such women were no more likely than others to suffer from back pain.
The sports scientist, who has been researching the subject since 1997, using a slide rule and a caliper, found a 7mm difference in the height of bosoms; with those who went without a bra faring best against gravity.
Professor Rouillon suggested that bosoms become “dependent” on lingerie support once women start wearing it, meaning that supporting muscle is under-used and degrades more quickly.
He said his initial results “validated the hypothesis that the bra is a false ‘necessity’” but that he would not advise women who have relied on bras for years to cast them aside.”
Some of the women who took part in the experiment, carried out at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (University Hospital) in Besançon, said stopping wearing a bra had even helped ease back pains.
British research on post-menopausal women has previously suggested that those who wear a bra are more likely to suffer bosom pain.
A French family of seven including four children kidnapped in north Cameroon and taken to Nigeria by suspected Boko Haram militants have been released, a senior Cameroon official said on Friday.
“They are all alive and well,” Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, secretary general of Cameroon’s presidency, said in a statement carried by state radio. He said the family had been handed to Cameroon authorities late on Thursday.
The family, which was on holiday, was abducted in February by men on motorcycles, armed with Kalashnikovs in Dabanga about 10 km (six miles) from the Nigerian border near the Waza national park, reports Reuters.
Gunmen claiming to be from Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram later released videos of the family, threatening to kill them if authorities in Nigeria and Cameroon did not release Muslim militants held there.
The parents of the family, which included two boys and two girls as well as another relative, worked for French utility firm GDF Suez.
